Mobile Medical Unit and Training

Through some local contacts with an American medical team - Bryan and Riechelle Buchanan, Mayan Hope will be bringing a mobile medical and dental unit into the local villages to perform minor medical and dental care. More complex cases than what we are equipped to handle from the mobile unit will be referred to the hospital or doctors in Nebaj for follow-up. We expect to begin this program with the beginning of the new school year in February of 2004. We believe this program to be very important to the over-all health of the community. Often villagers do not attend to what they consider to be minor health problems until they end up becoming major problems. By bringing the mobile unit directly to the village, people are much more inclined to visit the medical team and have problems attended to.

In addition, this same medical team will be doing a one day seminar and hands-on training session for all of our pre-school teachers at the next general training session. We believe that are of our teachers should educated and equipped to handle emergencies in the schools or community where medical care is often unavailable in emergency situations.
